Fistula First Data Trends

chart

Each month, Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC) produces a national dashboard that compares both AVF prevalence and incidence across ESRD Networks. In addition to this national dashboard, Network 11 produces a dashboard monthly that shows current vascular access trends on both a local and regional level. Select any of the following links to view current national and regional data trends.

National Comparison of AVF Prevalence

This chart shows a comparison of AVF prevalence among the Networks. Prevalence is defined as all chronic (maintenance) hemodialysis patients on dialysis in the provider facility in a given month. Network 11's current prevalent AVF rate of 53.1% lags behind the national average and also places Network 11 in the bottom third when compared with other Networks. However, Network 11 has accelerated its rate of improvement and currently is a leader of other Networks in AVF prevalence improvement over the last 12 months .

Network 11 AVF Prevalence Improvement

This chart shows improvement seen in AVF prevalence rates. The Fistula First project has continued since October 2003, and improvement has been seen both in Network 11 and nationally. It is exciting to see the shift in Network 11 from a larger number of facilities achieving low AVF rates to a larger number of facilities achieving high rates of AVF. As improvement has been seen, many Network 11 facilities have used this success to seek an even higher AVF rate. As a result, two-thirds of Network 11’s facilities have surpassed the 50% mark, and as of December 2009, over 20% of Network 11’s facilities have already met the KDOQI’s recommendation of 65%.

National Comparison of AVF Incidence

This chart shows a comparison of AVF incidence among Networks. AVF incidence is defined as the percentage of patients who started hemodialysis using an AV fistula. Though Network 11's current incidence AVF rate of 30.3% slightly lags behind the national average.

National Comparison of AVF Incidence Improvement

This chart shows improvement seen in AVF incidence rates. For the first year of Fistula First, virtually no improvement was seen in Network 11’s AVF incidence rates. Several strategies were implemented that placed additional focus on AVF incidence, including three surgeon workshops and CKD initiatives through the Upper Midwest Fistula First Coalition. These strategies have made a positive impact on Network 11’s overall fistula rate for incidence, bringing Network 11 to the top quartile for incidence improvement among other ESRD Networks.

Network 11 State Comparison

This chart shows improvement in AVF prevalence among Network 11's states. All states are making improvement in AVF prevalence. Due to the improvement made by Network 11 facilities, all five states have surpassed the 50% AVF prevalence rate.

Network 11 Provider Comparison

This chart shows improvement in AVF prevalence among Network 11's providers. Since the start of the Fistula First initiative in October 2003, corporate facilities as well as regional chains and independent facilities have made varying levels of improvement.
